Alien Seed Pod from Hell!!

DSC_0008

We have a sweetgum tree in the back yard. If you aren't familiar with this tree, they are a very nice variety, with pretty, regular, palmate leaves with star-like points.

Then, there's the seed pod.

This thing looks like it's about to jump down your throat and then burst through your chest after it gestates. It doesn't look much better after it dries, turns brown, and falls off the tree.

It's climbing the wall

I'm guessing this is an old sign...

Ears up

She's so sweet -- she's playful and loving and a really good girl.

Ears down ...

DSC_0049

This is Honey -- she's the sweet girl that came to us to foster about 3 weeks ago. She was still full of milk from feeding her puppies, and she had almost no weight left to her. Since then, she's put on some weight, got stronger, and got fixed, and she's ready for adoption from OK Yorkie Rescue.

She has some pretty interesting ears, as seen from this post and the next.

ABC Wednesday -- X is for Xenolith

To quote Wikipedia, "A xenolith (Greek: 'foreign rock') is a rock fragment which becomes enveloped in a larger rock during the latter's development and hardening."

I found this example at our local rock and brick store.

You can't go to San Antonio without eating at least one meal at Mi Tierra.

While walking down the riverwalk in San Antonio, we spotted this little egg under a bridge support. I don't think it made it to "bird".

Man, I really HATE puppy millers...

Honey-in-stocking

This is Honey, our newest foster.

Honey came to us engorged with milk. In other words, the scum that threw her away TOOK HER AWAY FROM HER NURSING PUPPIES. The vet gave us the blue stocking to help her reabsorb her milk and bring her uterus back tight. It will likely be about 3 weeks or so before she can be spayed, and another couple of weeks after that before she’ll be adoptable. Of course, once she is adoptable, she’ll go fast – she is very sweet and affectionate, even given how badly she’s been treated. I can’t even imagine how her puppies are doing, given that, as I said, they were still nursing when their mom was ripped from their pen. I guess I can be happy that they didn’t just shoot her or throw her up against a tree to get rid of her.

This is what happens when you buy dogs from pet stores like Petland. They get their dogs en masse from breeders who produce so many dogs that they lose their sense of humanity when it comes to the care of their breeding stock.

BBQ Hamburgers!!

Well, at least these turned out ok on the $15 grill!

Smokin!!!

This is my temporary grill. It was $15 and it cooks like it was $15, but it will have to do until my birthday (when I should be getting a replacement for my gas grill that died over the winter).

ABC Wednesdays -- T is for Tiny Tomatoes on the Topsy Turvy

We thought we'd give this "as seen on TV" thing a try this year. So far, so good.
